Greece has a rich history and an incredible culture, making it the perfect destination for travellers from around the world. For the ultimate romantic holiday, however, nothing beats the Greek Islands. Luxurious accommodations, incredible dining, breathtaking scenery and beautiful beaches combine to make many of the Greek Islands the perfect place to visit as a couple. Here are some of the most romantic places to visit for Greek Island holidays:
Mykonos: Located in the heart of the Aegean Sea is Mykonos, one of the most popular Greek Islands for couples and honeymooners. Although it can be crowded at certain times of the year, those looking for a more private, intimate experience should avoid the nightlife and choose a quieter resort near places like Ano Mera or Ornos. Stroll hand in hand through picturesque places like Little Venice, a quaint medieval town that is considered to be the most romantic place to watch the sunset in all of Greece. The light reflects on the buildings beautifully, so find a cafe and sit down for a cocktail to watch the sun set over the sea.
Santorini: There is a lot that Santorini is known for, including an active volcano, white sandy beaches, charming villages and more. Although there are countless beaches on Santorini, all of which are stunning, a few in particular are best suited for romantic couples looking for a more intimate location. Head to Vlichada, Pori or Agios Georgios for one of these more secluded and remote beaches. Another romantic way to spend time in Santorini is to visit one of the many local wineries. Take a tour of the premises and then indulge in a tasting session, being sure to bring home a bottle or two as a souvenir.
Corfu: This is a more tame and quiet island than Mykonos or Santorini, and that privacy is often beloved by couples on a romantic holiday. Since the island was once controlled by foreign powers like Venice and even the British, it has a unique culture that seems much more traditionally European than Greek at times. Dining on Corfu is spectacular, with a wide range of traditional and authentic Greek restaurants serving classic dinners by candlelight.
Rhodes: With warm weather year round, beautiful beaches and impressive architecture, Rhodes is a popular island for tourists from around the world. Couples should choose to stay on the southern side of the island for a less crowded and more romantic feel. Head to the Castle of Monolithos in order to soak up amazing historical ruins and perhaps more importantly, the best views over the sea to watch a breathtaking sunset. On the south side of the island many of the beaches are almost empty at times, providing an exclusive place to spend your Greek Island holidays.
